Get an Internship
I started at this school feeling as though I was the only one without an internship and the only one not having their shit together when it came to planning the future to a T. I was frustrated and felt behind, like I wasn’t going about this fashion nonsense the right way, or that I didn’t even know where to start besides going to class. But as the sob stories ran in from the many not so happy interns, I started to think twice about rushing into an internship just to say I had one.
Not until I scored my amazing first internship did I realize that waiting for the right match might just be the better way to go, at least for me. Call me crazy, but I’m not one for taking coffee orders everyday to “get the experience”, lugging 18 dresses across Manhattan with my own metro money, or being called ten different names before anyone with a job title aside from “intern” gets it right. I know we all start somewhere, but when working for free (ahem, excuse me, “for credit”) I would like to start where I am at least respected and can essentially learn something.
Enter my internship at K Public Relations. Boy, did I truly get lucky with this one. I have loved working for this company since the first day I walked in. The team is probably the best part along with Hale and Hearty being directly downstairs. But seriously, I have to thank these girls for giving me a great opportunity at an awesome company. I’ve been with KPR for almost two semesters now and I hope to continue for plenty more!
Side note of advice on advice:
I have continued to get the same advice from many people now, “intern, intern, intern!” And I have always interpreted it as to intern at as many different places that you can. I still agree with the advice, but I’m starting to interpret it in another direction, lately. Maybe I don’t need 8 different internships to better myself. Maybe it’s about snagging that one internship that will develop me from just an intern into a qualified employee. Maybe that one internship is the real opportunity.
